UNITS Security Day 2022
Organization of a university event
What is the UNITS Security Day?
The UNITS Security Day 2022 was an event at the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg with the aim to advertise the study program “Unternemes- und IT-Sicherheit” (short: UNITS). The event was especially aimed at current and prospective students from the surrounding area. Set up like a mini-event by the Chaos Computer Club (short: CCC), there were presentations on the topic of IT security by the regional companies Leitwerk AG and aramido, as well as by the Section 77 – the “Chaostreff” (local CCC distribution) of Offenburg.
The UNITS Security Day 2022 was the first of its kind and was continued in the following year.
Agenda
At the start there was a small Opening with a presentation by UNITS students. Interesting projects of our study program were presented, as well as the todays CTF-Challenge. IThis involves a small vulnerability we have built into the university infrastructure that must be found during breaks between presentations! It reveals a small passphrase, whose find was rewarded with cocktails during the evenings “Get together” closing.
Before the lunch break, things got down to business: the Pixelwars took place. In the Pixelwars game, known from the Chaos Computer Club (CCC), you learn hands-on how to communicate with network services. In short, you have to tell a server to paint a picture for you. There are two teams: Blue Team and Red Team. Both teams are each given the task of painting a picture on a digital, gridded canvas. However, there is only one canvas for both teams. With the help of commands (which are of course discussed in advance), you can color individual pixels on the canvas – and of course paint over the pixels of the other team. With the help of Python scripts you can gain an advantage and be programmatically faster than your opponent. The team that completes the assigned image first wins the game.
Spread throughout the morning and afternoon were the following presentations:
- Leitwerk AG: Internet of Things: Maximum Comfort, Minimum Security?
- Section 77: Project presentation: “Nerdschloss”
- aramido: Smartphone Hacking – How secure is your smartphone?
- aramido: Hands-on: Thread-Modeling Card Game
The event was closed with drinks at the Gecko Bar Offenburg during a “Get together” event.
Who was involved in the first UNITS Security Day?
The project was planned exclusively by students of the Offenburg University of Applied Sciences. We were supported financially and in terms of advertising by the university’s media faculty.
